Trick training is a fantastic way to strengthen your bond with your dog. It also provides mental stimulation, especially on those rainy days when going outside isn’t an option. Recently, I’ve been focusing on tricks that use the foundational behaviour of 'hold.' This means teaching your dog to use their mouth to hold something as part of the trick.
Here are 5 mouth/hold tricks that you can teach your dog!
1 - Burrito

This adorable trick involves your dog holding a blanket while they roll over. The result? They roll themselves up like a burrito! It’s a delightful twist on the classic roll-over trick and is sure to bring a smile to your face.
2 - 4 in a Row

This trick is quite self-explanatory. It adds precision to a “tidy up” trick and is definitely more advanced. Just a quick note: please don’t attempt this if you think your dog might swallow the discs!
3 - Ring Stack

This is one of my personal favourites! Ring stacking is a fantastic trick that always impresses. While it requires precision, it’s definitely easier than the 4 in a row trick. Your dog will love the challenge!
4 - Xylophone

We’re still working on this one! Currently, my dog needs a target stick to follow, but we’re making progress. This xylophone was a thoughtful gift from a customer who challenged us to learn it. It’s been a fun journey!
5 - Cup Stack

This trick is a bit tricky! I have to hold the cups in place because they tend to slip around. As your dog adds cups, the height changes, making it even more challenging. It’s a great way to keep them engaged!
Which of these tricks is your favourite?

Why Trick Training Matters
Trick training is not just about fun; it’s about building a strong relationship with your dog. When you engage in these activities, you create trust and understanding. Your dog learns to rely on you for guidance, and you both enjoy the process together.
Tips for Successful Training
Be Patient: Every dog learns at their own pace. Celebrate small victories!
Use Positive Reinforcement: Reward your dog with treats or praise when they perform the trick correctly.
Keep Sessions Short: Dogs have short attention spans. Aim for 5-10 minute training sessions.
Practice Regularly: Consistency is key. Regular practice helps reinforce what your dog has learned.
Conclusion
Teaching your dog these mouth tricks can be a rewarding experience for both of you. Not only do they provide mental stimulation, but they also strengthen your bond. So, grab a blanket, some cups, or a ring stack, and let the fun begin!
Remember, the goal is to enjoy the process together. Happy training!
